EL DORADO, Ark. — The SouthArk Stars men’s basketball team recently brought together athletes and community leaders for its first-ever Community Day, an event designed to connect student-athletes with experienced professionals and mentors from across the region.

Held on the South Arkansas College campus, the event welcomed a diverse group of community members representing a variety of professions, industries, and leadership roles. The gathering provided Stars players with a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, ask questions about life and career development, and gain valuable insight from individuals who have found success in their respective fields.

Rather than focusing solely on basketball, Community Day emphasized personal growth, leadership, and preparation for life beyond the court. Keynote speakers featured Ed Downs and Daniel Bandy. Players rotated throughout the event, interacting with mentors in small groups and one-on-one conversations. Topics ranged from career planning and professional networking to overcoming challenges, developing strong character, and becoming effective leaders within their communities.

“The goal of Community Day was to expose our student-athletes to people from different backgrounds and walks of life,” said the SouthArk Stars head coach Eric Collins. “These relationships and conversations can have a lasting impact on our players as they continue to grow both as students and as young adults.”

The event created an atmosphere of open dialogue and learning. Community leaders shared personal stories, lessons learned throughout their careers, and advice on navigating opportunities and setbacks. In turn, players were encouraged to ask questions, seek guidance, and learn more about the experiences that shaped the mentors’ paths to success.

Photos from the event showed players and community guests gathered in discussion throughout the college’s library and learning spaces, highlighting the informal and interactive nature of the program. Participants concluded the event with a group photo to commemorate the inaugural gathering.

Community Day reflects SouthArk Athletics’ commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes by fostering connections that extend beyond competition. By bringing together local leaders and members of the Stars basketball program, the event strengthened ties between the college and the surrounding community while providing players with valuable mentorship opportunities.

Following the success of the inaugural Community Day, SouthArk hopes to continue building on the program with monthly meetings. For more information or to participate, contact Coach Collins at ejcollins@southark.edu.
