South Arkansas College Baseball | Athlete Feature
From Smackover, Arkansas, to one of college baseball’s biggest stages, Tanner Mitchell is taking the next step in his baseball journey. The South Arkansas College standout has committed to Ohio State University, where he will continue his career in the Big Ten Conference after completing his season with the SouthArk Stars.
For Mitchell, the decision came down to opportunity and development.
“I believe Ohio State was the best place for me to be able to improve and play on one of the biggest stages, like playing in the Big Ten,” Mitchell said.
His commitment represents more than a new uniform. It reflects the growth, perseverance, and competitive mentality developed throughout his junior college experience.
MORE THAN BASEBALL
Mitchell credits SouthArk with helping him grow both on and off the field.
“SouthArk was one of the best decisions I could have made—not only for baseball but just becoming a better person and playing for the best coaches around. I couldn’t ask for much better,” he said.
After three years of junior college baseball, Mitchell believes the experience has prepared him to compete at the next level. He plans to bring that same toughness and mentality to Columbus.
“I’m going to bring the way I play to Ohio State. Just being in JUCO for three years, I feel like it’s just different mentally and grit that I will be able to bring to the table,” Mitchell said.
THE FOUNDATION BEHIND THE SUCCESS
Behind Mitchell’s journey has been the unwavering support of his mother, whom he credits as his greatest inspiration.
“My mom. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t still be playing baseball. She always kept me going and pushing me all the way. She has done so much for me. Couldn’t ask for any more from her,” Mitchell said.
Her encouragement has helped him stay committed to the game and continue pursuing his goals. And while Ohio State represents a major milestone, Mitchell has his sights set even higher.
“Hopefully, after I’m done with college, I will still be playing baseball for a professional team,” he said.
A PROUD MOMENT FOR SOUTHARK
SouthArk Baseball Head Coach Cannon Lester believes Ohio State is the right move for Mitchell and sees a bright future ahead for the Smackover native.
Mitchell’s commitment reflects the impact of South Arkansas College’s continued investment in developing student-athletes, building character, and preparing players to pursue opportunities at the next level. His journey is a proud moment for the Stars, his family, and the South Arkansas community.
As Mitchell prepares for his next chapter, he leaves SouthArk with valuable experience, a stronger competitive mindset, and the ambition to keep climbing.
One more season as a Star. A new chapter as a Buckeye. A future still being written.
Congratulations to Tanner Mitchell on his commitment to Ohio State University. SouthArk Baseball is proud to be part of his journey.
Go Stars. Go Buckeyes.
